MUSIKGARTEN:

EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC

Classes meet once a week in groups of up to 8 children, grouped by age, for 30, 45, of 60 minutes. Basic concepts of music are emphasized. Activities include singing, rhythm games, improvised movement to music, playing timpani drums, xylophones, and many different kinds of rhythm instruments. All classes combine methods of Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze.

Developed in Europe, these joyful ways of bringing music to children and introducing them to music reading (both melodic and rhythmic) are being used throughout the western world. Students become well-prepared for future music study through these fun-filled programs.

Why begin musical instruction this early? Studies show that the first 5 years of a child’s life are the most important for fully realizing his or her aptitude. Preschool General Music is the type of musical experience that will insure the development of the child’s musical ability. Studies have revealed that this kind of early music education enhances other aspects of the child’s life such as fine motor skills, language and emotional and social development.

30 Minute Class: Family Music

These classes are a fun parent-child experience for our youngest students. Toddlers up to age 2 benefit from learning alongside an adult. This class is tailored to the short attention span and need for movement in a child this age, and gives a child early exposure to a musical environment.

45 and 60 Minute Classes: Preschool Music

These longer classes are designed for ages 3 to 7, combining rhythmic movement with a deeper attention to learning musical concepts. These classes take place without the parents in the room to encourage the independent tendencies of children at this important age.
